Regret

Sure, there are times when it is better to be cautious and not jump into everything with eyes wide shut. But usually the problem is not the risk, it is that I lack the self-confidence to see myself succeeding at the great task. Self-doubt tries to creep in whenever it can.

I watched the pattern happen over and over again:

1. I’d get an idea
2. I’d start playing it out in my mind and making plans to execute it.
3. I’d get really excited about the potential.
4. I’d think of one possible scenario that would make it not work perfectly.
5. I’d give up on the idea.

What a sad way to go through this amazing experience we call “life”! Repeated studies have shown that somewhere between 85% and 95% of the things we worry will happen never actually happen. So almost all of our fears are based off of totally false assumptions.

The important point to remember is that it is okay to believe in yourself and it is okay to make a mistake every once in a while. But it is almost always worth it to take the risk in experiencing something new or going after that big goal. It will work out way more times than it will fail.

You never hear of people on their death bed saying, “I wish I would have always made the safer decisions.” Most of them will say, “I wish I had taken more chances. I wish I would have experienced more.”

Every decision you make throughout the day is a gamble. Everything has some degree of risk to it. If you are going to be betting on something anyway, you might as well bet on yourself.

The honest truth is that if you believe in something with enough passion and you are willing to work hard enough, you truly can accomplish just about anything. Success in life simply boils down to your attitude and your effort.

The Serbian commander, Dragoljub Kunarac was arrested in 1999 by the ICTY and taken to the Hague along with two other soldiers to be tried for crimes against humanity.

The legal question was whether the acts of these soldiers were crimes against humanity or simply individual acts of depravity. In order to prove that the soldiers' acts were crimes against humanity, the prosecution in the Foca rape case argued three things:

1. The use of rape in attacks on civilians was widespread and systematic,
2. To support the allegation that rape was “widespread and systematic” the prosecution worked to show that the tactic was repeated and continuous (systematic) and that what had happened in Foca was a representative sample of Serbian methods of ethnic cleansing in Bosnia (widespread),
3. Rape was not simply an individual action but involved a chain of command. This did not mean that a commanding officer had ordered his men to rape, but that rape was occurring with his knowledge and he did not intervene to stop it.

The prosecution brought witnesses (whose identities were often concealed for protection) who described grisly ordeals of gang rapes, sexual enslavement and the existence of rape houses or rape camps.

The defense, on the other hand, argued that since the accused had not killed the women they had sex with, the acts should not be taken as a serious crime. Going further, a witness to the trial reported that the defense attorney provoked an audible gasp from the gallery when he concluded that, “The rape itself is not an act that inflicts severe bodily pain.” So, he argued, the victims were not exposed to any severe physical or psychological suffering.
